UK suspends visa application for Nepal

The UK Border Agency announces that, with effect from Monday 1 February, it will temporarily stop accepting student visa applications under Tier 4 of the Points Based System at the visa application centre in Kathmandu. This is a temporary suspension and the UK Border Agency will begin accepting Tier 4 visa applications again as soon as possible. Customers who are making applications in other visa categories are unaffected by this announcement.

The UK Border Agency has taken this decision in response to an unexpectedly high number of student visa applications at this time of year in parts of South Asia, and will therefore stop accepting any new applications under the Tier 4 student route in affected areas, including Nepal and North India. Rotary Club of Kogarah recently organised a fundraiser dinner at the Everest Tandoori Nepalese Restaurant. The event was held on 28th March 2009, Saturday, and the main purpose of the event was to raise funds for Gift of Sight and School Building program in Nepal.

In a televised address to the nation Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ today resigned as the prime minister and said that the latest ‘undemocratic and unconstitutional’ move of the President has resulted a political crisis in the country. He also claimed that his government was committed to bring the ongoing peace process into a logical conclusion. The Prime Minister admitted that the government failed to meet all the expectations of the people. “The opposition parties and few of the coalition partners have obstructed the government to perform,” he said, adding that national and international forces which advocated for regression also attempted to create obstruction.Prachandas speech summarised:

I announce my resignation from government,” Prachanda said in an address to the nation from Singha Durbar.

“I have reached the conclusion even to quit from government. Democracy is in danger. I resign from the cabinet.”

Breaking news: UML pulls out of government

An emergency meeting of the second largest coalition partner, CPN-UML, has decided to pull out of the five-party coalition and withdraw its support to the Maoist-led government with effect from today, party General –Secretary Ishwar Pokharel said. The decision follows UML’s disagreement with Maoists over the latter’s unilateral decision to sack army chief Rookmangud Katawal.

“We took the decision because the Maoists have breached the politics of consensus and collaboration,” Pokharel told journalists after the meeting. Read more…

Nepal govt fires Army chief, President ‘disapproves’ govt’s sack

President Ram Baran Yadav is learnt to have expressed his ’serious disapproval’ over the government’s decision to sack Chief of Army Staff Rookmangud Katawal, saying that it was taken without following “due procedures”.

Reports quoted sources at Shital Niwas (President’s Office) as saying that President Yadav is dissatisfied with the government decision as it was done without “political consensus” , something which he had been stressing from the very beginning.

Immediately following the cabinet’s decision, PM Dahal telephoned the President and informed him that government has sacked Katawal. Furthermore he said that MJF had supported the government decision and even requested the President Yadav’s help to avert “possible accidents” that the country may have to face owing to the decisioin.
